Neither a third marriage
of Johann Philipp Anton Kemper nor a burial entry for him was found in the
Alfhausen records. It seems to be probable that he emigrated in 1847 (59 years
old) together with his children Anna Maria Catharina (31 years), Gerhard Arnold
(25 years), Anna Maria (24 years) and Maria Catharina Elisabeth (18 years). The
appearance of a Johann Philipp Anton Kemper as a godfather in the USA is
another hint which points in this direction. Hermann Philipp who appears as a
godfather as well in the USA might have been Gerhard Arnold Kemper`s only
surviving brother Johann Hermann Philipp - who might be emigrated alone or as
the first member of the family.
None of the Kemper
children married or were buried (checked until 1875) in the Alfhausen parish.
While Anna Maria Kemper and Maria in the US records are probably Gerhard
Arnold`s sisters, we can`t be sure about the identity of "Louisa"
yet.

I checked the Alfhausen
baptismal records until 1810, but was not able to find any more children of the
Kemper/Alberding family. I have not checked the burial records (for early
deaths) and the marriage records for Johann Philipp Anton Kemper`s siblings
yet. But there is one entry which was striking enough to note it - because of
the given names.

Based on the 1829 burial
entry the month of birth for Johan(n) Arnd (Arnold) should be April/May 1746
instead of 1747. But these calculation faults were quite usual in 18th and 17th
century records - ecpecially for very old people.

The Alfhausen pre-1800
burial entries are very poor in information. Especially for the 1770-1790 years
we have only names, often no age and almost never any marital status or
occupation. For these two decades we can find no children under 14 years listed
in the burial registers - they were obviously not recorded.
Fortunately there was
only one Joan (Johann/es) Albert Kemper and only one Margaetha Gertrud Möhlmann
baptized between 1700 and 1730. The two burial entires below are the ones which
fit in here.

This means that Johan Albert
was - in all probability - 45 years instead of 47 when he died in 1761. I have
not check the baptismal entries for all children of Lubbert Kemper and Engel,
nee Goeß yet, but concentrated on a search in the early years of the Alfhausen
records (January 1679 to October 1680, from January 1682 on the parish
registers were recorded continuesly) in order to find the baptismal entry of
Lübbert Kemper based on the burial entries below.
Alfhausen burial

This is probably the
burial entry of Lübbert Kemper`s wife. The given age might be a rough
calculation, though there are a striking number of 60 or 70 years old people
buried in these early records - we can conclude that a lot of such ages were
just rounded or guess.

Alfhausen baptismal

There was as well
another Lubbert Kemper, born and baptized 3 ½ years earlier (see
part V. below). But after the 1748 burial entry points to the year of 1685,
because I was not able to find a marriage entry of another Lubbert Kemper and
because I did not find any other Lubbert Kemper buried in Alfhausen before
1780, I guess that this is the right one.
This means that it was
possible to trace the Kemper family 136 years and four generations further back
from Gerhard Arnold Kemper`s birth in 1821 to Lübbert`s in 1685 - 162 before
the emigration of your Kemper family. After both Gerhard Arnold Kemper`s father
Johann Philipp Anton and his grandfather Johann Arnold were Häuslinge it was a
luck that they lived in the Alfhausen parish for such a long period - Häuslinge
were landless and therefore often moved to other villages or parishes. Almost
all families in the Osnabrück villages like Thiene or Alfhausen can be traced
back to a certain old farm. This has not been possible for the Kemper family
yet, but it might be possible that the Kempe farm which belonged to the oldest
ones in Thiene was the one from which the Kemper`s were originally.
After all younger sons
(and daughters) were not entitled to inherit and the farms were not divided the
so called "abgehende" (leaving) sons had only the possibility to stay
on the farm as an unmarried uncle (farm worker), to leave the village and/or to
live as a Heuerling. This is why the number of Heuerlinge grew more and more.
Not surprisingly they were by far the biggest group of the American emigrants
of the 19th century.
For background
information about the history of Alfhausen I was able to find a very detailed
and informative book called: 1000 Jahre Alfhausen 977-1977, Alfhausen 1977. It
is no longer in print but can be accessed at libraries in Germany. I took a
short look at the Osnabrück archive and found Thiene is mentioned as the
biggest village in this area. In 1722 here were about 60 farms and cottages in
Thiene. Based on the census of 1852 the parish Alfhausen had 650 inhabitants -
178 crofters (Häuslinge), 102 farm hands, 99 farmers, 83 maids, 49 small
farmers ... (a number of other occupations) and one clog maker, who might have
been Johann Henrich Droppelmann (see part VIII. below).

Suggestions for further
research (very
briefly)
There are number of more
chances for promising research at the Alfhausen parish registers. The following
ideas are only thoughts to give you an idea of what could be done.
Right now I want to provide today`s Kemper addresses as follows. It might be
promising to get in contact with these families right now or to wait until we
have dates and information about Kemper relatives, who stayed in Alfhausen.
After I assume that all decendents of Johann Philipp Anton Kemper emigrated, we
would only able to present Johann Philipp Anton`s brothers to the Kemper
families, asking for any connections. These ones were born more than 200 years
ago, though.

This is surely the most promising contact after Josef Kemper lives in
one and the same village in which your ancestors lived! I checked the Rieste and Ankum
telephone register as well and found the following Kempers in Ankum (no Kemper
in Rieste):
